I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I lived in Illinois as well when I was younger. However, I have spent 26 years of my life, including the last 20, as a resident of North Carolina. I attended UNC-CH for both undergraduate studies and law school. I have been practicing law in Lenoir since 1994. I was elected to the Lenoir City Council in 2003 and am currently serving my second term.
I married my wife, Lisa, in 1991. I have two children: Benjamin, 12, and Jason, 9. My hobbies include reading, racquetball, sprint triathlons, watching old movies and using computers.
I am currently serving my second term as a Lenoir City Councilmember. I have never voted, and will never vote, for a tax increase. I have voted against zero-tax-increase budgets because they did not cut spending enough. Each time, I proposed a budget of my own that accomplished my goals.
I am against all government handouts to corporations. As a Lenoir City Council member, I was the only local elected official to vote against the massive Google incentives. While I am glad Google will be operating a data center here, I believe the best way for government to attract people and be "business friendly" is to reduce taxes, spending, and regulations so that everyone is treated fairly and left to invest and spend their money the way they see fit. As my City Council slogan has been, "He Knows It's Your Money."
I will support every attempt to curtail, impose a moratorium, or eliminate forced annexation by cities, towns and villages. I was originally elected to the City Council in part because I was involuntarily annexed. My neighbors and I fought the case all the way to the North Carolina Court of Appeals. I will continue the fight in the State House Chambers in Raleigh.
As a practicing attorney with 14 years of experience in the criminal courts of North Carolina, I see every day how the power of the police has curtailed our individual right to be free of illegal searches and seizures. I will seek to roll back such violations of individual liberties, so as to allow us again to be safe in our persons and our property.
I will propose and support legislation to allow third parties easier access to the ballot in North Carolina. North Carolina's ballot access laws, as passed by the Republicans and Democrats, only serve the purpose of closing off alternative dissenting viewpoints. Many other states have several third parties; their citizens have not been confused or led astray by such different ideas and ideals.
